Château de Couin

Built between 1745 and 1748 for the Count of Louvignies, Château de Couin is a remarkable example of Louis XV Rococo architecture. Covering 2,000 m², it is considered the largest château in the Artois region.

The visit combines the discovery of an extensive landscaped estate with richly decorated interiors reflecting several architectural periods and styles. Visitors may also extend the experience by staying in one of the guest rooms within the château.

The 6-hectare park features purple beeches, pink chestnut trees, maples and other notable species. A bridle path crosses the woodland, while sheep, a donkey and a horse contribute to the site's rural charm.

The château's four façades are decorated with Rococo sculptures depicting shells and plant motifs, created by Jean-Baptiste D’Huez. The former stables are also noteworthy for their pink and white marble features and blue stone troughs from Hainaut.

Listed in its entirety as a Historic Monument since 1965, the château illustrates the evolution of decorative styles from the 18th to the 19th century. Highlights include the Louis XV Grand Salon, the Louis XVI-style Salon de Compagnie, the Grand Dining Room and the Small Dining Room.

Visitors can also admire the impressive wooden staircase rising 8.80 metres high and the carefully restored guest rooms furnished with period décor.
